Question
Ammonia is added to water to make Windex. Which of the following Colligative properties are observed?
a) The vapor pressure of the ammonia solution is higher than pure water.
b) The boiling temperature of the ammonia solution is higher than pure water.
c) The freezing temperature of the ammonia solution is higher than pure water.
d) The osmotic pressure of the ammonia solution is less than pure water.
e) All of these properties are observed.
The answer is B, but I was wondering why the answer is B?
Explanation / Answer
a)
because of the interactions between solute and the solvent
the vapor pressure of the solvent will be reduced
so
vapor pressure of the solution will be lower than the pure solvent ( in this case , water)
b)
we know that
higher the vapor pressure , lower the boiling point
in this
vapor pressure is lowered , so the boiling point in increased
so
by adding a solute , the boiling point of the solution is increased
the increase is given by
dTb = Kb x m
c)
similarly
by adding a solute , the freezing point of the solution is decreased
it is given by
dTf = Kf x m
d)
the osmotic pressure of ammonia solution will be higher than pure water
So
the answer is B
