Question
CASE #2: Scenario: A 152-pound male is very heavy sweater and often has salt marks on his clothes following exercise. He regularly (5x/week) mountain bikes for 2-hour in hot humid conditions. Prior to his rides, he consumes 1L of water, and during his rides, he consumes 2 L of water along with 2 bananas. Then, immediately post exercise he consumes 2 cups of water. He barely finished his most recent ride due to nausea and muscle cramps. After his ride, he experienced dizziness as well as more nausea. His post ride weight was 155 pounds.
Explanation / Answer
Answer: Approximately 3.5L of fluid.
Water consumed prior to his ride:1L; Water consumed during his ride: 2L; Water consumed after the ride: 2 cups (approx 500 ml). He has consumed 2 bannana. (Single bannana of medium size contains approx. 105 cal) which can provide him with approx. 210 cal. So given the condition his initial body weight prior to bike ride was 152 pounds and after the bike ride exercise the body weight was 155 pounds. So, It may be assumed that he has consumed approximately 3.5 L of water from pre, during and post ride.
This temporary weight gain may be becuse of stringent muscle activity involved in the bike ride. Bike riding is also a form of cardio activity which triggers muscle to store more glycogen. Glycogen suuply is vital to fuel such cardio activity. During this process muscles store more glycogen. These stored glycogen attracts water which leads to weight gain post such exercise.
