Question

minilab 23: 2.0mL of HCl-ZnCl2 was added to 4 spearate test tubes. tube 1 had 1-butanol, tube 2 had 2-butanol, tube 3 had 2-methylpropan-2-ol, and tube 3 had isobutanol in it. tube 1 =no reaction, tube 2= reaction seen, tube 3 = reaction seen, 2 layers visiblem . tube 4= reaction seen but was not suppose to happen .

What was your working hypothesis and did the results support it? Do you think there would be any competition between elimination and substitution under these conditions? If so, what would the other product be and what would its fate be under these conditions?

Explanation / Answer

HCl-ZnCl2 is called as Lucas reagent which is used to identify primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols.

Tertiary alcohols will react very fastly and turbidity will form within 30 seconds.

Secondary alcohols will react and forms turbidity within 5 minutes.

Primary alcohols will give turbidity after a long time or upon heating.

1-butanol = Primary alcohol.

tube 2 had 2-butanol = Secondary alcohol

tube 3 had 2-methylpropan-2-ol = Tertiary alcohol

and tube 4 had isobutanol = Primary alcohol.(slowly it may rearranges to secondary alcohol)
