Question

Consider the following exothermic reaction. (dark circles = A and light circles = B) a) Write a balanced equation for the reaction. b) What is the sign (+ or -) of DeltaH for the reaction? A.) positive B.) negative C.) There is not enough information to answer the question with any certainty. c) Is the reaction likely to be spontaneous at lower temperatures only, at higher temperatures only, or at all temperatures? A.) The reaction is likely to be spontaneous at lower temperatures only. B.) The reaction is likely to be spontaneous at higher temperatures only. C.) The reaction is likely to be spontaneous at all temperatures.

Explanation / Answer

a)
6AB2 ->   3A2 + 6B2

b) bigger molecules break to form smaller molecules
hence , deltaH = A)positive

c) as delG= delH - TdelS
so, for it to be spontaneous ,delG=negative
but as delH is positive
so, TdelS > delH would make reaction spontaneous

also, as initially there were 6 molecules but now there are 9 so, delS increased and positive

hence, answer =B
