Explanation / Answer

If the two parents are carriers for the sickle cell anemia, then the probability of having one child affected and three unaffected is 1/4.

The sickle cell anemia is an autosomal recessive disorder. When a person is said to be affected, only when he has both genes of sickle cell anemia. If one cell is normal cell and another is abnormal(gene for sickle cell anemia), the person is said to he a carrier, and he may not show any symptoms. A child is getting two genes from parents, one from father and one from mother. Both father and mother has one defective gene. The chance of getting the defective genes from both parents is 25%.
