Ans.) Whooping cough is an extremely infectious respiratory disease and caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Its symptoms include aggressive coughing, sneezing, fever etc. In California it became epidemic and has affected many people and also results in untimely death of few new born. Commonly used therapy to cure this infection is vaccine waning which does not last for a lifetime. Antibiotics are also prescribed as the precautionary measure in severe infection.
The catarrhal period is the most infectious stage of whooping cough (the first two weeks after beginning of the cough).
