Question
Before this laboratory, you should: Read the lab handout until you have a clear sense of what you will be doing. Note any points that need clarification. In your laboratory notebook update the table of contents, fill in the heading, and write in the purpose of the laboratory session. Lastly, summarize the procedure. Answer the questions below. Your instructor will collect this at the beginning of the lab period. Pre-lab Questions Use the data below obtained when 5.00 g of zinc were reacted with various amounts of 2.0 M HCI and the graph to answer the questions that follow. Zn (s) + 2 HCI (aq) rightarrow ZnCI_2 (aq) + H_2 (g) 1. Which reactant is limiting the amount of H_2 produced in the region of the graph labeled A? Region B? 2. How many grams of hydrogen gas can be produced if 200.0 mL of 2.0 M HCI are reacted with 5.00 grams of zinc? 3. How many grams of Zn are required to completely react with 200.0 mL of 2.0 M HCI? How many grams of H_2 can be produced? (use back of this page if necessary)Explanation / Answer
1. limiting reagent at labeled A = HCl
labeled B = no reaction because total Zn is consumed. so that
limiting reagent = Zn
2. from equation
1 mol Zn = 2 mol HCl = 1 mol H2
No of mol of zn = 5/65.38 = 0.0765mol
No of mol of HCl = 200/1000*2 = 0.4 mol
limiting reactant = Zn
No of mol of H2 produced = 0.0765 mol
mass of H2 produced = 0.0765*2 = 0.153 grams
3.
No of mol of HCl = 200/1000*2 = 0.4 mol
No of mol of mol Zn required = 0.4/2 = 0.2 mol
SO that
No of mol of mol H2 produced = 0.2 mol
mass of H2 = 0.2*2 = 0.4 grams
