Question
The following drawing (Figure 1) are those of solid ionic compounds, with green spheres representing the cations and blue spheres representing the anions in each. Which of the following formulas are consistent with each drawing? LiBr consistent with drawing (1) consistent with drawing (2) inconsistent with both drawings NaNO_2 3 consistent with drawing (1) 3 consistent with drawing (2) inconsistent with both drawings CaCl_2 3 consistent with drawing (1) 3 consistent with drawing (2) inconsistent with both drawingsExplanation / Answer
Solution:- In each drawing green spheres are represening cations and blue spheres are representing anions. In second drawing, green and blue spheres are in 1:1 ratio so it is consistent with LiBr.
In first drawing, green and blue spheres are in 1:2 ratio. In NaNO2, there are three types of atoms (Na, N and O) so the spheres has also to be of three types but non of the drawings have three types of spheres so none of them is consistent with NaNO2.
So, for part B the right answer is, "Inconsistent with both drawings."
First drawing has 1:2 ratio between green(cation) and blue(anion). CaCl2 also has the same ratio between Ca+2 and Cl-. So, the correct choice for part C is " consistent with drawing 1."
