Question

52.2. Preparation of 4-(1H-pyrrol/indol-1-yl)benzenamine (2a-2b) A well-stirred mixture of 1a-1b (0.1064 mol), FeCl3.6H20 (4.3 g, 0.016 mol) and activated carbon (0.38 g, 0.0319 mol) in 1,4-dioxane (200 mL) was heated to 50 °C, and then hydrazine hydrate (66.5 g, 1.0638 mol) was added drop-wise at this temperature. After the completion of addition, the mixture was refluxed for 5 h. The precipitate was removed by hot filtration and the filtrate was concentrated to give a yellow viscous substance. The residue was quenched with water (200 mL) to stir for 30 min, filtered, washed with a small amount of water and dried to give 2a-2b.

Explanation / Answer

In this reaction, you are using hexa hydrate of ferric chloride. Hence, nitrogen gas is not required. In general if we use water as a solvent or if our reagents are not dried (i.e they contain moisture or water of hydration), then nitrogen gas is not necessary. However if we are working with air. moisture sensitive reagents then we must use nitrogen gas.
