Explanation / Answer

2. Ksp for Ca(OH)2 = 5.5 x 10^-6

with

[OH-] = 0.1 M

solubility of Ca(OH)2 in solution is,

solubility = [Ca2+] = Ksp/[OH-]^2 = 5.5 x 10^-6/(0.1)^2 = 5.5 x 10^-4 M

3. Mg(OH)2 solubility in pure water

Ksp = [Mg2+][OH-]^2

let x amount of salt is in solution

5 x 10^-11 = (x)(2x)^2

solubility = x = 2.32 x 10^-4 M

the solubility of Mg(OH)2 is much lower in pure water as compared to Ca(OH)2 in pure water and this would thus lead to large amounts of error in meaurement of Ksp. Thus the same method can not be used for Mg(OH)2.

4. Ksp for Cr(OH)3 = [Cr3+][OH-]^3

with,

[Cr3+] = 4 x 10^-6 M

[OH-] = 3 x 4 x 10^-6 = 1.2 x 10^-5 M

Ksp = (4 x 10^-6)(1.2 x 10^-5)^3 = 6.912 x 10^-21
