e. copper(II)carbonate
- write the balanced net ionic equation, the equilibrium expression of each of the following complex ions at 25 degree celsius
a. lead(II)ion with hydroxide ion
b. mercury(II)ion with cyanide ion
c. copper(II)with ammonia
d. silver(I)with thiosulfate ion
Explanation / Answer
Solution:- For insouble and slightly soluble we write (s) that is insolule and don't break them to their ions. So, the equations would be as...
(a) Molecular equation:- Zn(OH)2(s) + 2HNO3(aq) --------> Zn(NO3)2(aq) + 2H2O(l)
zinc nitrate and nitric acid are soluble and so we write the ions for both of these.
ionic equation:- Zn(OH)2(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) ------> Zn+2(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) + 2H2O(l)
in this ionic equation only nitrate ion is the spectator ion(common ion) so it would get canceled out while writing net ionic equation.
Net ionic equation:- Zn(OH)2(s) + 2H+(aq) -------> Zn+2(aq) + 2H2O(l)
(b) molecular equation:- AgBr(s) + HNO3(aq) ----------> AgNO3(aq) + HBr(aq)
except AgBr all are soluble so we will write the ions for them.
ionic equation:- AgBr(s) + H+(aq) + NO3-(aq) ---------> Ag+(aq) + NO3-(aq) + H+(aq) + Br-(aq)
on canceling the spectator ions then net ionic equation will be...
AgBr(s) ----------------> Ag+(aq) + Br-(aq)
(c) molecular equation:- MgF2(s) + 2HNO3(aq) -------> Mg(NO3)2(aq) + 2HF(aq)
ionic equation:- MgF2(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) ---------> Mg+2(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) + 2H+(aq) + 2F-(aq)
net ionic equation:- MgF2(s) -------> Mg+2(aq) + 2F-(aq)
(d) molecular equation:- NiCl2(s) + 2HNO3(aq) -------> Ni(NO3)2(aq) + 2HCl(aq)
net ionic equation:- NiCl2(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) ---------> Ni+2(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) + 2H+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)
net ionic equation:- NiCl2(s) -------> Ni+2(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)
(e) on product side we get carbonic acid (H2CO3) which is a weaker acid and very unstable and break to give water and carbon dioxide.
molecular equation:- CuCO3(s) + 2HNO3(aq) -------> Cu(NO3)2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
net ionic equation:- CuCO3(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) ---------> Cu+2(aq) + 2NO3-(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
net ionic equation:- CuCO3(s) + 2H+(aq) ---------> Cu+2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
