23. Solutes when added causes a decrease in freeing point and an elevation in boiling point of the solvent it is added to. Solvents molecules are held together by intermolecular forces. When cooled the liquid solidfies. When solute is added, the strong intermolecular forces are disrupted between solvent molecules and now greater amount of cooling is required to solidify the same liquid. In short adding solute dilutes the solvent system.
A liquid boils when the vapor pressure of the system equals to that of atmospheric pressure. The solvent has a particular vapor pressure. When a solute is added we would have lesser number of solvent molecules now on the surface and thus higher amount of heat is required to reach the same vapor pressure that existed when only pure solvent was present to eqalise to that of atmospheric pressure needed to boil the liquid.
