The goal of this assignment is to investigate the healthmap.org website each week (1-4) and find a new and specific outbreak that has found its way into the general population. Your focus will be to record three new outbreaks in all various parts of the world- North, South, East, and West regions of the world throughout the four weeks of class. (10 points each week) Found in the Discussion Board link.

Here is a list for East:
1. Disease name: Influenza (Avial influenza virus A)
a. Region: Beijing, Guizhou, Hunan, Zheijang (China)
b. Out of 10, about 8 cases have shown clear signs of pneumonia. 9 of these had contact with poultry (thought to be the prime source of avian influenza A virus), 1 of the had no contact with poultry.
c. 10 cases have been confirmed in China. All cases have been male with a median age of 53.5 years.
d. Preventing responses include:
i. Efforts to minimize poor hygiene control in poultry industry
ii. Strengthening virology surveillance in the region.
2. Disease name: Foot-and-mouth disease
a. Region: Japan
b. There are about 5-6 patients in most health centers for this disease. The diseased are usually children in 1-2 years of age group. Symptoms include rashes and blisters on the skin of hands, feet, and mouth.
c. About 29,000 cases have been confirmed to be affected with the disease since June end in Japan.
d. So far, the preventive measures including advising children wash hands regularly with soap and maintain hygiene.
3. Disease name: Eastern equine encephalitis
a. Region: Brook country, Georgia, U.S.A.
b. Only one horse has been confirmed for eastern equine encephalitis so far but the illness is highly infectious for humans so caution has been suggested. The symptoms include headaches which signify inflammation of the brain. There is no human vaccine against this disease yet but equine (horse) vaccines are available.
c. Only one case in horse has been confirmed so far.
d. Preventive measures include
i. Effective use of mosquito repellant
ii. Wearing of long sleeves clothes
iii. Remove any stagnant water in flower pots or potholes around the area of living.
