Question
Write balanced equation for the reaction of 1) each metal with 6 M HC1 2) each metal with 6 M HC2H302 3) CaCo3 with HC1 4) HC1 with NaOH what type of reaction occurs between metal and an acid? write general equation for this type of reaction Explain the difference in reaction rates of given metal with two different acids Write balanced equation for the reaction between C02 gas and lime water, CA(OH)2. What is the name for the milky participate that forms Explain the difference in the volumes (number of drops) of Hal and NaOH required to produce neutral solution in Part D of this experiment.Explanation / Answer
A) Balanced reaction,
1) Metal with HCl
Metal with +2 oxidation state
M2+ + 2HCl ---> MCl2 + H2
Metal with +1 oxidation state
2M+ + 2HCl ---> 2MCl + H2
Metal with +3 oxidation state
2M3+ + 6HCl ---> 2MCl3 + 3H2
2) Metal with HC2H3O2
Metal with +2 oxidation state
M2+ + 2HC2H3O2 ---> M(C2H3O2)2 + H2
Metal with +1 oxidation state
2M+ + 2HC2H3O2 ---> 2M(C2H3O3) + H2
Metal with +3 oxidation state
2M3+ + 6HC2H3O2 ---> 2M(C2H3O2)3 + 3H2
3) CaCO3 + 2HCl ---> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
4) HCl + NaOH --> NaCl + H2O
B) Reaction between metal and acid = displacement reaction.
C) As the size of metal goes up the rate of reaction with acid goes down. The smaller metals tends to react faster with acid and form salt and H2 gas.
D) Ca(OH)2 + CO2 --> CaCO3 + H2O
The milky precipitate is calcium carbonate.
E) Depending upon the intiial concentration of acid present in solution, we would need NaOH volume to get a neutal solution.
