1- Salts can be formed by the reaction of an acid with a base. For each of the four salts you tested, write the reaction of an acid with a base to form that salt. Indicate whether the acid and base are strong or weak.
2-Write the dissociation equations for each of the four salts (into ions- you should use the subscript (aq) for them).
3- Write the hydrolysis equations for each of the four (4) salts (see intro for examples).
4- According to your data, indicate which salts appear to be neutral, acidic, and alkaline.
5- Explain why each salt appears to be neutral, acidic, or alkaline.
6- List an example other than the salts used in this lab for each of the following:
a neutral salt (formed by the reaction of a strong acid with a strong base)
a neutral salt (formed by the reaction of a weak acid with a weak base)
an acidic salt
an alkaline salt
7- In the lab, which of the salts could be used to make a buffer and why?

Explanation / Answer
1. NaOH + HCl = NaCl + H2O
2NaOH + H2CO3 = Na2CO3 + 2H2O
H2CO3 + 2NH4OH = (NH4)2CO3 + 2H2O
Mg (OH)2 + H2SO4 = MgSO4 + 2H2O
2. NaCl = Na+ + Cl-
Na2CO3 = 2Na+ + CO3-2
(NH4)2CO3 = 2NH4+ + CO3-2
MgSO4 = Mg+2 + SO4-2
3. NaCl + H2O = NaOH + HCl
Na2CO3 + 2H2O = 2NaOH + H2CO3
(NH4)2CO3 + 2H2O = H2CO3 + 2NH4OH
MgSO4 + 2H2O = Mg (OH)2 + H2SO4
4. NaCl and MgSO4 are neutral, Na2CO3 and is basic, ( NH4)2 CO3 is basic.
5. The neutral salts are both in water by dissociation gives strong acid and strong base ; basic salts gives strong base but weak acid; acidic salt gives strong acid and weak base.
6. KCl
NH4CN
NH4NO3
NaCN
7. Buffer can be formed by the salt of weak acid and its strong base salt so Na2CO3 can be used as buffer.
