Question

Calculate precise pH values from Part (e). using a calculator. Analyze your estimates, and discuss how you can improve them. e. Break into pairs, and then take turns estimating the pH value associated with each of the following hydrogen ion concentrations. One person in cache pair should estimate the [H+], and the other person should use a calculator to obtain the precise value. Switch roles back and forth, continuing the exercise until you are confident in your estimating ability. 1.3 times 10^-5, 5.5 times 10^-12, 9.7 times 10^-8. 2.2 times 10:, 4.6 times 10^-10, 8.0 times 10^-7.

Explanation / Answer

1(a)(i). [H+] = 1.0x10-4

pH = - log [H+]

= - log (1.0x10-4)

= - (log 1.0 + log 10-4)

= - (0 + (- 4) log 10)

= - (- 4 * 1)

pH = 4

(ii). [H+] = 2.5x10-4

pH = - log (2.5x10-4)

= - (log 2.5 + log 10-4)

= - ( 0.39 + (- 4) log 10)

= - (0.39 - 4 )

pH = 3.61

(iii). [H+] = 5.0x10-4

pH = - log (5.0x10-4)

= - (log 5.0 + log 10-4)

= - (0.69 + (- 4) log 10)

= - (0.69 - 4)

pH = 3.31

(iv). [H+] = 7.5x10-4

pH = - log (7.5x10-4)

= - (log 7.5 + log 10-4)

= - (0.87 + (- 4) log 10)

= - (0.87 - 4 )

pH = 3.13

(v). [H+] = 10x10-4

pH = - log (10x10-4)

= - (log 10 + log 10-4)

= - (1 + (- 4) log 10)

= - (1 - 4)

pH = 3
