a. for radioactive decay, the integrated form of the rate equation does not utilize concentration, but number of nuclei, Ntand N0, instead. what kinetic order do all types of radioactive decay exhibit
c. nuclear diarmament could be accomplished if weapons were not replenished. the tritium in hydrogen bomb warheads decays to helium-3 with a half life of 12.26yrs and must be replaced or the weapon is useless
(i) write a balanced equation for the tritium decay reaction
(ii) what fraction of the tritium is lost in 5.50yrs
Explanation / Answer
1) All radioactive decay follows first order kinetics represented by the following equation:
ln(N/N0) = -kt --------(1)
2) Given: t1/2 = 28.8 yrs
- As per the first order kinetics:
rate constant k = 0.693/t1/2 = 0.693/28.8 = 0.024 year^-1
- Using equation 1 and substituting for: N0 = 13 ppm; N = 1.0 ppm and k = 0.024 year-1
ln(1/13) = -0.024*t
t =106.87 years
