Question

For each of the following solutions, determine if the solubility of the solute will increase or decrease given the described change. Click in each box to toggle the relative change in solubililty (up=increases, down=decreases, leave the box blank for no change). the solubility of sugar in syrup when hot syrup is placed in refrigerator the solubility of CO_2 in sparkling water when room temperature sparkling water is placed in an ice cooler the solubility of CuSO_3 when a CuSO_3 solution is healed to 60 degree C the solubility of O_2 in a shallow lake when the water is warmed by the sun on a hot summer day

Explanation / Answer

(1) On placing in regriferator, temperature of solution decreases and therefore solubility of sugar in syrup will decrease.

At lower temperature, low average velocity of particles of solute and less movement.

(2) CO2 is a gas. Solubility of a gas in liquid, decreases on increasing temperature and increases on decreasing the temperature. This is because, vapour presure increases with temperature.

Therefore solubility of CO2 in sparkling water decreases on placing in ice cooler.

(3) CuSO3 is a solid. Energy is needed, to melt or break solids. Therefore as the temperature increases, solubility of CuSO3 will increase.

(4) Solubility of O2 will decrease in a shallow lake when water is warmed on a hot summer day. (Temperature is increasing and O2 is a gas)

(In case of gases, energy is not needed to change the phase.)
