Question

Consider a reaction that has a negative H and a negative S. Which of the following statements is true?

This reaction will be spontaneous only at high temperatures.

This reaction will be spontaneous at all temperatures.

It is not possible to determine without more information.

This reaction will be spontaneous only at low temperatures.

This reaction will be nonspontaneous at all temperatures.

A.

This reaction will be spontaneous only at high temperatures.

B.

This reaction will be spontaneous at all temperatures.

C.

It is not possible to determine without more information.

D.

This reaction will be spontaneous only at low temperatures.

E.

This reaction will be nonspontaneous at all temperatures.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:- A reaction is spontaneous if delta G is negative and non spontaneous if delta G is positive and at equilibrium if delta G is zero.

From Gibb's energy equation,

delta G = delta H - T*delta S

from this equation, delta G is more negative if delta H is negative and delta S is positive.

If both delta H and delta S are negative then reaction will be spontaneous only at lower temperature because the temperature increases the product of T and delta S and since the delta S is negative and we also have negative sign in the equation for T*delta S, It affects delta G.

So, the correct choice is D. This reaction will be spontaneous only at low temperatures.
