Question
In a mixture of Helium, Argon, and Nitrogen gases, the partial pressure of Helium was found to be 0.44 atm, and Argon 450 mmHg and the total pressure of the mixture 2.00 atm. What is the partial pressure of the Nitrogen gas? A. 736 mmHg B. 760 mmHg C. 500 mmHg The Combined Gas Law relates the pressure, volume and amount of a gas from one state to another, keeping the temperature constant True False Alcohol has density = 0.50 g/ml. Which barometer will be taller, one using alcohol or one using water? A. both will be the same height B. alcohol C. water On a phase diagram, the solid/liquid line is called the fusion curve True False In a mixture of Helium, Argon, and Nitrogen gases, the partial pressure of Helium was found to be 0.44 atm, and Argon 450 mmHg and the total pressure of the mixture 2.00 atm. What is the partial pressure of the Nitrogen gas? A. 736 mmHg B. 760 mmHg C. 500 mmHg Thank you
Explanation / Answer
Q1.
Partial Pressure is the pressure exerted by a specie of a gas. That is the pressure that will be exerted alone by this specie if let alone at the same conditions.
Note that we have a formula for Total Partial Pressure:
PT = P1 + P2 + P3 + ... + Pn
From the data, PT = 2 atm
P1 = 0.44 atm
P2 = 450 mm Hg
P3 = ?
Note that we have two units, atm and mm Hg. Change to mm Hg all units since answer is required in mm Hg
the conversion factor: 1 atm = 760 mm Hg
then
0.44 atm --> 0.44*760 = 334.4 mm Hg
P1 = 0.44 atm = 334.4 mm Hg
PT = 2 atm = 2*760 = 1520 mm Hg
Solve for P3
1520 mm Hg = (334.4 + 450 + P3) mm Hg
P3 = (1520 - 334.4 - 450) mm Hg
P3 = 735.6 mm Hg
The partial pressure of Nitrogen must be near 735.6 mm Hg; nearest answer is A; 736 mm Hg
