Need help on question 3
The R_f value of a certain compound was found to be 0.53. Assuming the compound traveled up the TLC plate a distance of 24.8 mm during development what was the solvent front (in mm)? Please carry maximum number of significant figures through to final answer then round to one decimal place. Do not include units. A mixture of compounds A and B was analyzed by TLC (the developed TLC plate is depicted in Figure 1). Which one of the following statements is correct? Compound A is responsible for spot I and compound B is responsible for spot Compound A is responsible for spot II and compound B is responsible for spot I What is the Rf value of spot II on the developed TLC plate depicted in Figure 1? Please carry maximum number of digits through to final answer then round to two decimal places.Explanation / Answer
Q1.
Rf = 0.53
d = 24.8 mm
Recall that Rf is simly a reference value that allows to qualitatively and quantitatively show how a compound or specie behaves with a specific solvent. In this case, if the Rf value is high, then the solvent and solute are pretty similar.
If the Rf value is low, it means that the solvent is not similar to the solute. The solute will be more into the plate or stationary phase.
Now
Rf = distance travelled / total solvent front
if
Rf = 0.53 and distance travelled = 24.8 mm
then
Total solvent front = distance travelled / Rf
Total solvent front = 24.8 mm / 0.53 = 46.7924mm
the solvent front was about = 46.7924 mm or 47 mm to 2 sig fig.
