Question

5. An unknown metal, X, was found to react with copper (II) ions but not with zinc ions. Where would it be located in the activity series you determined?

6. Of the metals used in this lab, which one is the strongest oxidizing agent? ________________________

7. Which of your CuCl2 solutions (0.1 M or 3.0 M) was the best in terms of maximizing the cell potential? Report the molarity of the solution and the cell potential. Explain why you picked that solution and explain the trend of the solution CuCl2 molarities versus the cell potentials.

8. A. Does the ranking in your activity series agree with published data? What are the differences?

B. What factors can cause a difference between experimental and reported voltage values? Cite specific voltages and cells and why they differ from published values. Cite % errors for each cell and explain your errors.

Explanation / Answer

Answer-5)

1) Some common metals are arranged in the decreasing order of there reactivity known as reactivity or activity series.

2) This activity series sreve the tool for predicting the  products of displacement reactions and the relative reactivity of metals in other reactions.

3) Activity series with some common metal shown here,

K > Na > Li > Ca > Mg > Al > Zn > Fe > Sn > Pb > H (non Metal)> Cu > Ag .........

4) A metal in the activity series can displace any metal below it in the series from its compound.

5) Given that an unknown metal X do react with Cu(II) it means it might be displacing Cu(II) in a corresponding displacement reaction and is more reactive than Cu(II) and neccessarily above the Cu(II) metal in activity series. At the the same time given that it doesn't react Zn i.e. unknown X is not capable of displacing Zn hence must be less reactive than Zn and neccessarilly below the Zn in activity series.

6) Finally unknown X positioned belowe Zn and above Cu(II) in an activity series.
