Question
Manufacture of Acetylene. For the making of 6000 ft^3 of acetylene (CHCH) gas at 70 degree F and 750 mm Hg, solid calcium carbide (CaC_2) which contains 97 wt % CaC_2 and 3 wt % solid inerts is used along with water. The reaction is CaC_2 + 2H_2 O rightarrow CHCH + Ca(OH)_2 downarrow The final lime slurry contains water, solid inerts, and Ca(OH)_2 lime. In this slurry the total wt % solids of inerts plus Ca(OH)_2 is 20%. How many lb of water must be added and how many lb of final lime slurry is produced?Explanation / Answer
acetylene to be made = 6000 ft^3
temperature = 70 F = 294.26 K
pressure 750 mmHg
Gas constant = 998.97 ft3 mmHg K1 lb-mol1
Using ideal gas equaiton
PV = nRT
n = Moles = PV / RT = 750 X 6000 / 998.97 X 294.26 = 15.30 lbs mol (C2H2)
so lbs moles of Ca(OH)2 added = 15.30
So lbs moles of CaC2 = 15.30
The mass of CaC2 = moles X molecular weight = 15.30 lb mole X 64 = 979.2 lbs
wt % of inerts added = 3%
Mass of inerts added = 0.03 X 979.2 = 29.376 lbs
Mass of Ca(OH)2 = moles of Ca(OH)2 X mol wt = 15.3 X 74 = 1132.2 lbs
20% of toal weight = 1132.2 + 29.376 = 1161.576 lbs [weight of Ca(OH)2 + solid inerts]
Mass of water needed = four times of mass of weight of Ca(OH)2 + solid inert + water needed for reaction
Mass of water needed = 4 X 1161.576 + 15.30 X 2 X 18 = 5200 lbs
Lime slurry weight = 5815 lbs
