Question

Hi, I need help with Relative Error Calculation. In my Biochem Lab, we had to measure out 100 ul of distilled water using a 100-1000 ul Pipette. The water temp was 23.5 and it was 0.9974217 g/cm3 or g/mL (Prof gave us this value) We did three different measurements of the 100 ul water...first time it was 0.111 g, second time it was 0.110 g, and third time was 0.110 g. The avg was 0.1103. Our professor said we had to calculate the Relative Error in % and Im not sure how to do that...she said E%= (Avg volume observed-Vsetting)/Vsetting*100..... For the average weight, i converted it to mL using the given 0.9974217 g/mL then devided it by the volume setting of pipette but got a huge number. Any help is greatly appreciated on how to solve this problem! I tried to be as clear as possible, so hope it makes sense! thank you!

Explanation / Answer

we have

auerage mass of 100 ul water = 0.1103 g

therefore

volume of it = 0.1103 g / 100 ul

= 0.1103 g / ( 100 x 10^-3 ml )

= 0.1103 g / 0.1 ml

= 1.103 g/ml

and we can now solve

E%= (Avg volume observed-Vsetting)/Vsetting*100.

= ( 1.103 - 0.9974217 ) / 0.9974217 * 100

= 10.5851 %
