Hi, Please help on Part H #4-6. Stuck on how to calculate and not sure if my other calculations are correct.
G. Determination of the Concentration of the Solution Prepared from Commercial Aspirin or generic brand
1. The absorbance of diluted solution prepared for ASA Tablet was 0.1170.
2. From the graph plotted in F, such an absorbance corresponds to a concentration of 7.984x10-5 mol/L ASA
H. Determination of the Percentage of Acetylsalicylic Acid in an Aspirin or generic brand Tablet (Tablet = 0.41g)
1. From G, the concentration of tetraaquasalicylatoiron(III) in the dilute solution was y = 1663x - 0.01579 = [(0.1170+0.01579)/1663] = 7.984x10-5 mol/L
2. The concentration of the dianion of salicylic acid in the 100 mL sodium hydroxide stock solution was 7.984*10-5mol/L * 0.100L / 0.012L = 6.653*10-4mol
3. The number of moles of the dianion of salicylic acid in the 100 mL sodium hydroxide stock solution was 6.653*10-4mol/L * 0.100L = 6.653*10-5mol
4. The number of moles of acetylsalicylic acid initially present and therefore also in the Aspirin tablet was __________.
5. The mass of acetylsalicylic acid in the Asprin tablet was __________.
6. The percentage of acetylsalicylic acid in the Aspirin tablet was __________.
Explanation / Answer
The number of moles of acetyl salicylic acid (AS) should be equivalent to numbe rof moles of dianion of salicylic acid
Number of moles of ASA = 6.653 X 10^-5 moles
mass of acetylsalicylic acid = Moles X moleuclar weight of ASA = 6.653 X 10^-5 X 180 = 0.0119 grams
% of ASA in aspirin tablet = Mass of ASA X 100 / weight of tablet = 0.0119 X 100 / 0.41 = 2.9%
