Question
Fritz Haber was awarded a Nobel Prize for the processes he invented in which nitrogen and hydrogen hases are combined to make ammonia(NH3), a valuable chemical and a vital nutrient in modern agriculture.
a. If 30.5g of nitrogen with 6.59g of hydrogen are combined in a closed system, what mass of amonia will be produced?
b. How much nitrogen is required to fully consume 10.2g of hydrogen?
c. If we had 11.1 of nitrogen and 2 of hydrogen, how much nitrogen would remain if all the hydrogen was consumed?
Explanation / Answer
a) N2(g) + 3H2(g) ----> 2NH3(g)
1 MOL N2 = 3 mol H2 = 2 mol NH3
no of mol of N2 = wt / Mwt = 30.5/28 = 1.01 mol
no of mol of H2 = 6.59/2 = 3.295 mol
limiting reagent = N2
no of mol of NH3 produced = 1.01*2 = 2.02 mol
mass of NH3 produced = 2.02*17 = 34.34 grams
b)
no of mol of H2 = 10.2/2 = 5.1 mol
N2 required = 5.1/3 = 1.7 mol
c)
no of mol of N2 = wt / Mwt = 11.1/28 = 0.4 mol
no of mol of H2 = 2/2 = 1 mol
1 mol N2 reacts with 3 mol H2
no of mol of N2 reacted = 1/3 = 0.33 mol
remaining N2 = 0.4 - 0.33 = 0.07 mol
mass of N2 unreacted = 0.07*28 = 1.96 grams
