Question

How would you make various concentrations of the following mixture given that the volume of the flask is 25 mL. Water density is 0.997 g/mL. You are going to mix NaCl with water. To clarify, how would you make for example 0.1 M, 0.5 M, 1.0 M, 1.5 M? How much NaCl are you gonna use since you have given M and 25 mL?

Explanation / Answer

First we have to make 1.5 M NaCl solution. for that we have to calculate the mass of NaCl required

moles of NaCl = 1.5 mol / 1.0L

therefore

in 25 ml = 1.5 mol x 0.025 L

= 0.0375 mol

therefore

mass of NaCl requrid = 0.0375 mol x 58.44 g/mol

   = 2.1915 g

therefore

for 1.5 M NaCl solution for 25 ml , there is requirement of 2.1915 g NaCl.

from this solution using molarity formula we can dilute this solution and can get the other solution

M1V1 = M2V2

for 1.0 M

V1 = 1.0 M x 25.0 ml ) / 1.5 M

= 16.67 ml of 1.5 M NaCl

the same procedure used to get the other left solution.
