Question
1, Discuss the difference between these alkalinity values: (1), Pm and Pr (2) Prand Mf. 2, One liter of solution contains 3.0 g of NaOH and 8.3 g of Na2COs. Compute the theoretical values of Prand Mf 3, Alkalinity tests on a mud give a Pm value of 5.0 and a Prvalue of 0.7. Determine the approximate amount of undissolved lime in the mud. The volume fraction of water in the mud is 80%. 4, A fresh mud has a methylene blue capacity of 5 meq/100 ml of mud. Determine the approximate sodium montmorillonite content of the mud.Explanation / Answer
(1) Difference between Pm and Pf
Pm and Pf are the alkalinity values calculated using Phenolphthelin indicator.Pf is different from Pm it tests the effect of bases and salts while Pm includes the effect caused by both dissolved and undissolved salts and bases.
(2) Difference between Pf and Mf
Mf is calculated using Methyl Orange as indicator while Pf is calculated using Phenolphthelin indicator.
Pf is measured upto the ph value of 8.3 while Mf is measured in the range of 4.2 - 4.5.
