Question
Experiment for Fisher Esterification of carboxylic Acids.
A) In the experiment it states, in the 100ml round bottom flask add 3.00g of p-aminobenzoic, 40.0 ml of ethanol. Stir mixture until the solid is dissolved.
1) From that statement. "How do you calculate the number of moles of "p-aminobenzoic, and ethanol" ?
2) Show the formula and steps to calculate the number of moles from those compounds.
B) How do you calculate the "ratio of moles" of ethanol per mole of p-aminobenzoic acid
C) Which was the limiting reactant?
Explanation / Answer
1 and 2) molecular weight of p-aminobenzoic acid = 137.14 g/mol
the weight of p-aminobenzoic acid used in reaction = 3.00g
no. of moles = weight of substance / molecular weight of substance
no of moles of p-aminobenzoic acid = 3 g / 137.14 g mol-1
= 0.0218 mol.
volume of ethanol used = 40 mL = 40 cm3
density of ethanol = 0.7893 g/cm3
density = mass / volume
mass = 0.7893 g/cm3 x 40 cm3
= 31.572 g
molecular weight of ethanol = 46.07 g/mol
no of moles of ethanol = 31.572 g /46.07 g/mol
= 0.6854 mol.
B) since in p-aminobenzoic acid only one carboxylic acid group is present so only one molecule of ethanol will need to convert it into an ester. this means only 0.0218 mol of ethanol is needed for complete conversion of the p-aminobenzoic acid to the corresponding ester.
C) p-aminobenzoic acid is the limiting reactant in this reaction since it is less in moles than no. of moles of alcohol.
