Chapter 15 Worksheet ANS: HOBr, HOI. A) HCI>HCIO >HBrO >HIO B) HIO > HBrO > HCIO > HC D) HCIO>HCI>HBrO >HIO HCIO> HBrO>HCI HIO ANS: Which of the following statements is incorrect? A) One reason why HCl is a stronger acid than HF is that the H-CI bond is weaker 24. than the H-F bond. B) F is a stronger base than Cl C) One reason why HCl is a stronger acid than HF is that Cl is more electronegative than F.). D) The acids HBr and HI both appear equally strong in water. E) One reason why HCl is a stronger acid than HF is that CI has a larger atomic radius than F. AnsExplanation / Answer
24)
answer is C
fluorine is the most electro negative element
HF is the weakest acid because of it's strong H-F bond. Fluorine being very small in size overlaps better with 1s orbital of hydrogen leading to a strong bond. ( Small atoms overlap better) Hence HF can not give proton easily.
Hence HF is weakly acidic.
As we go down the group, size of the halogens increases. This results in poor overlap of it's orbital with 1s orbital of hydrogen making the H-X bond weaker.
So HCl is more stronger acid
all other options are true and exact.
