Explanation / Answer

The atomic mass of Li 6 is 6.015 amu. Calculate the nuclear binding energy of this

nucleus and the corresponding nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Mass number = 6

No. of protons = 3, then

Neutrons = Mass number – proton number = 3 protons and 3 neutrons are present

Mass of proton = 1.0078316

Mass of neutrón = 1.00867

Total mass = 3*1.0078316 + 3*1.00867= 6.0495048 amu

The mass defect:

6.015-6.0495048= -0.0345048 amu

Mass = 0.0345048/(6.022*10^23) = 5.729*10^-26 g or -5.729*10^-29 kg

Energy released (Einstein E = mC^2)

E = m*C^2 = -5.729*10^-29 * (3*10^8)^2 = -5.1561*10^-12 J

Nuclear binding energy = E = -5.1561*10^-12 J

Nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Nucleon = neutron + protons = 6

E per nucleon = E / nucleon =( -5.1561*10^-12)/( 6) = 8.593*10^-13 J/nucleon

change to kJ/mol = (6.022*10^23)/1000 = 6.022*10^20

Etotal =(8.593*10^-13)*( 6.022*10^20) = 517470460 kJ/mol
