In this lab exercise you will encounter man with naming in order to navigate through this exercise and clearly communicate your resuit . y different substances. You must be proficient Complete the table on the reverse side of this page by providing the name or the formula of the substance. Many of these substances have been encountered in previous labs. Review your Lab Reports from earlier labs and make pertinent notes about the substance in the "Notes" column. Include any other information you may have already learned about the substance. What chemical tests would you use to distinguish between different salts, such as in this exercise: sodium chloride and ammonium chloride? Describe a characteristic test for the sulfate ion and for the carbonate ion. Stated another way, what reagent(s) could be used to test for the presence of each of these ions? What is litmus paper? What color changes are associated with acidic and basic solutions? ne of the reactions in this lab used vinegar as a reagent. What is vinegar and what is t tive ingredient? ok at the reactions for Activities 2 and 3 involving ammonium. In both cases wate duct. But in one case it is shown as a liquid and in the other, a gas. Why the differe sical state? (Hint: What else might be given off in the reaction?)

Explanation / Answer

1) Add concentrated NaOH solution to a small amunt of the salt in a test tube, and heat it over a flame gently. The presence of ammonaical smell confirms NH3 gas evolving if the salt is NH4Cl. This is not observed in case of NaCl.

2) Add a few drops of dil. H2SO4 in a test tube containg the salt.

If it is CO32-, brisk effervescence is observed to to the evolution of a colourless and odorless gas (CO2) that turns lime water milky.

Boil a small amount of salt with dil. HCl in a test tube. Filter the contents, and to the filtrate add few drops of BaCl2solution. formation of a white precipitate of BaSO4 shows the presence of SO42- anion.

Litmus paper is a crude indicator paper to estimate the pH of a solution. Litmus paper turn red under acidic conditions and blue under basic conditions.

Vinegar is a solution containing 5-20 % acetic acid (CH3COOH). It is produced by the microbial fermentation of alcohol.
