Enamel is made of calcium phosphate. The matrix of enamel contains calcium ion and phosphate ions. The saliva inside mouth dissolves calcium ion and reduces its density in enamel. The enamel becomes weaker. If fluoride is used it stringly binds with calcium ion to produce calcium flouride. Calcoum fluoride is not easily dissolved by water of saliva and it heardens the enamel.
