Question
I need help observing what is going on in the following UV-vis spectrums. I added the following metal complexes(zinc acetate, copper acetate, and silver acetate) to the free base porphyirin meso-Tetrakis-2-fluoro-5-methylphenyl porphyrin .The corresponding soret peaks and q-bands are below:
Soret Q-bands
Zinc 423 nm 589,551 and 535 nm
Copper 422 nm 554,535,511 nm
Silver 423nm 592,553,535 nm
Free base 418 nm 589,551,535 nm
Explanation / Answer
In the following UV spectrum, this all is due to the electronic transitions occuring the molecules. The porphyrin ligand shows the pi to pi* transition due to the presence of pi electrons. In electronic transition of porphyrin ring, there is a strong transition from ground state to second excited state (S0 to S2) which gives a band in UV spectra and this band is called as Soret or B band. The electronic transition which takes place from the ground state to the first excited state gives Q band which is a weak transition. In this case their is an interconversion between the S2 and S1 due to this rapid conversion between them the flouroscence is obtain from S1 orbital only and due to this multiple Q bands arises
