ion Advance Study Assignment -Chemistry 180 Experiment 10- Ionie and Covalent Compounds For each substance, the the first column. If there are significant minor species, write ur text.) ce, write the formula(s) of all species you expect to be present in aqueous solutior Enations (). (), (8), or (a) for all species. (You may need to consult the solubility rules in their formulas in the last column. U Major Species Minor Species HNO Glucose, NH4Br HF Na2SO4 . Write molecular, ionic, and net ionic equations for the reaction between aqueous solutions of nd AgNO Exp. 10- Ionic and Covalent CompoundsExplanation / Answer
(a) HNO3 strong electrolyte, major species are H3O+ and NO3-
HNO3 + H2O ----> H3O+(aq) + NO3-(aq)
(b) Glucose is a non-electrolyte, major species is C6H12O6(aq)
C6H12O6 + H2O -----> C6H12O6(aq)
(c) NH4Br is a strong electrolyte. major species are NH4+ and Br-
NH4Br + H2O ----> NH4+(aq) + Br-(aq)
(d) Na2SO4 is again a strong electrolyte. And, major species are Na+ and SO42-
Na2SO4 + H2O -----> 2Na+(aq) + SO42-(aq)
In all of above there is not a minor species.
(e) In case of HF major species is ion pair [H3O+.F-] . Minor species are H3O+, F- and HF2-
HF + H2O -----> [H3O+.F-] -----> H3O+ + F- For first reaction Kc >> 1 while second one has Kc << 1. This means although HF is completely dissociated. It exist as ion pair [H3O+.F-] , which justifies its low acidic nature. Kc is equilibrium constant.
[H3O+.F-] + HF ----> H3O+ + HF2-
