A saturated solution of potassium chlorate is formed from one hundred grams of water. If the saturated solution is cooled from 80 C to 50 C, how many grams of preciptate are formed? What compound shows a decrease in solublity from O to 100° C? Which salt is most soluble at 10° C? & 9 Which salt is least soluble at 50° C? Which salt is least soluble at 90° C?

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER:

(1) KClO3 is the least soluble salt at 20oC.

(2) Solubility of KCl at 80oC is 50g/100 gm of H2O

Hence 200g of water will dissolve 100g of KCl

(3) 40 g of KNO3 can dissolved in 100g of water at 40oC (as per the curve given). Hence 300g of water will dissolve a meximum 120g of KNO3 at 40oC.

(4) NaCl shows the least change in solubility from 0oC to 100oC.

(5) It is a saturated solution.

(6) Solubility of potassium chlorate at 80oC and 50oC is 40g and 20g/100g of water respectivelly. Hence when the solution is cooled from 80oC to 50oC 20g of KClO3 will precepitate out
