Question

can someone help me identify those unknowns, the information i got from the lab is in picture 1,the possible structures in pic 2,and i attached the IR for the unknown liquid; KMNO4 and DNP for solid are also poitive, the type of DNP used is 2,4-DNP

The Unknowns Lab Purpose: To conduct a series of solubility and functional group tests to identify the given unknown structures. Results: Substance added H2O NaOH HC1 H2SO4 insoluble insoluble insoluble soluble Unknown solid solubility insoluble insoluble insoluble insoluble Liquid Number of Description unknown Functional Identity Structure group Tests (Cm1 )intensity) done 131 Clear liquid 3359 (smal)I-DNP( with no odor 2961 (medium) 2- KMnO4(+) 2837 (medium) 3-NaHCO3(+) 2739 (medium) 1690 (intense) 1598 (intense) Number ofDesciptionMelting poi Solicd int Functional Identiy Structure unknown group Tests done White shiny.300 -DNP crystal powder (above 300) 2- KMnO4 50 3-NaHCO3(+) with flower like Odor

Explanation / Answer

Liquid: IR spectrum indicates the =C-H Aldehyde streching at 2837.32. Positive DNP test confirms aldehyde. On reaction wth KMnO4 it will form acid which will react with NaHCO3 to give positve test. Hence liquid compound is p-anisladehyde.

Solid: White shiny crystals with with positive DNP test and positive test for KMnO4 followed by NaHCO3 so the structure of compound would be 4-chlorobenzaldehyde
