Question

Light, of course, bends when it enters a swimming pool from the outside. However, the colors

don’t change underwater. Assume that the frequency remains the same, but wavelength

decreases. Describe the process and the energy of light when this happens. Slow down and

think about what happens to light when it hits water. Think about its speed, wavelength and

frequency.

A) Dispersion is the process of light bending when going from mediums of different densities.

The energy of the photons in the water is lower, due to its lower wavelength.

B) Diffraction is the process of light bending when going from mediums of different densities.

The energy of the photon is the same because its frequency is unchanged

C) Refraction is the process of light bending when going from mediums of different densities.

The energy of the photon is the same because its frequency is the same

D) Interference is the process of light bending when going from mediums of different densities.

The energy of the photon is lower due to its wavelength being lower.

Part 2: What would be the energy of a photon released if an electron were accepted by a positively

ionized noble gas compared to a neutral halide and a neutral alkali metal (group 1A)

A)The energy of this photon will be lower than both

B)The energy of this photon will be higher than both

C)The energy of the photon will be less than the alkali metal but more than the halogen

photon

D)The energy of the photon will be less than the halogen but more than the alkali metal

What would give the most explosive reaction- Explain why

A)Lithium and Radon

B)Lithium and Fluorine

C)Francium and Fluorine

D)Francium and Radon

Explanation / Answer

C) Refraction - The speed changes which causes the bending of the light.

B) The energy will be higher than the both. Because an positively charged ionized noble gas is highly unstable and and an electron will help it to complete its octet. A complete octet (stable) always have less energy when compared to other states and this difference in energy is released when an atom accepts an electron.

C ) Francium and Fluorine

Francium is more reactive than Lithium because it is a bigger atom. The outer electron are is further from its nucleus than that of Lithium.

In case of halogens it becomes reverse. Larger atoms means less reactive . Hence Flourine is the most reactive
