Question
PLEASE EXPLAIN THE ANSWER how to determine the readucing and the oxidizing agent
Consider the following standard reduction potentials and half reactions:
NADP+ + H+ + 2 e- ? NADPH E’0 = -0.324 volts
Crotonyl-CoA + H+ + 2 e- ? Butyrl-CoA E’0 = -0.150 volts
A half cell containing NADP+/NADPH is connected with a half cell containing
crotonyl-CoA/butyrl-CoA with all the reactants present in 1.0 M. Which of the
following statements is true?
A. NADPH is the oxidizing agent
B. Crotonyl-CoA reduces NADP+
C. NADPH reduces crotonyl-CoA
D. Crotonyl-CoA is oxidized
E. Buturyl-CoA reduces NADP+
Explanation / Answer
The reduction potential of both the half cell reaction is given
If in both the half cell reaction is connected the one which have higher reduction potential get reduced and the one which have lower reduction potential get oxidised
Since the reduction potential of crotonyl co-A is higher in comparision to NADP+ so crotonyl co-A get reduced and NADPH is oxidised
So the answer is C part NADPH reduces crotonyl coA
