OWv2 |Online teachin x+ -? do Use the Refereaces to access important values if areded Sor this qaestion Use the pull-dows boues to specify states soch as (aq) or (s) If a box is not needed leave it blank If no reactices occurs leave all boxes blank and click on "sabmit Consider the reaction when aqueous solutions of calcium acetate and aluminum sulfate are combined (Use the solublity rules provided in the OWL Preparation Page to determane the solubility of compounds) The net ionic equation for this reaction is

Explanation / Answer

calcium acetate is Ca(CH3COO)2

aluminum sulfate is Al2(SO4)3

3 Ca(CH3COO)2 +  Al2(SO4)3 === 3 CaSO4 (s)+ 2 Al (CH3COO)3, this would be the balanced reaction

this would be the reaction, (CaSO4 is not a soluble compound)

lets separate the ions in order to find the net ionic equation

3Ca + 6 CH3COO + 2 Al + 3 SO4 ===== 3 CaSO4 + 2 Al + 6 CH3COO

2 things to remember:

1. Do not separate the solid compounds (CaSO4) only aqueous components

2. Remove compounds that appear on both sides of the equation

3Ca + 3 SO4 ===== 3 CaSO4

We can simply the equation

Ca+2 (aq) + SO4-2(aq)===== CaSO4 (s)
