1. The chemical name of aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid.
2. Aspirin acts as an analgesic (fever and inflammation suppressing agent) by inhibiting irreversibly the enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX) which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins which are responsible for fever, etc. Aspirin has an acetyl group with which it acetylates irreversibly COX thus inhibiting the enzymatic activity when it binds to these COX.
3. Though willow bark also contained acetylsalicyate, its major ingredient was salicylic acid along with other similar salicylates.
