In paper chromatography ,used for separaton of colored compounds, the Rf value is an important factor.Rf vaue is the ratio of distance travelled by the colored compound to that of the developing solvent. This value is constant for a given colored compound, under similar conditions of temperature, pressure and for the same solvent.
Thus, in unknowns X the Rf =0.27 corresponds to methyl orange, and Rf=0.89 corresponds to that of phenolpthalein
in unknown Y,Rf=0.63 corresponds to that of methyl red and Rf=0.87 corresponds to that of phenol red.
Dyes in unknown X=methyl orange, and phenolpthalein
Dyes in unknown Y=methyl red and phenol red.
possible errors in paper chromatography: 1) error in determination of distance from the base line ,this may occur if you take a bigger dot sample of the compound that spread in the paper and you do not get the point of concentration of the sample.
3) The solvent travels higher than the limit, and thus becomes untraceable.(if the paper chromatograph is left in the solvent for longer than optimum time)
