4. Using the overall balanced equation for this lab found on page 4, what is the theoretical yield of Alum. (KASO 12H,O)if 12 grams of aluminum are completely reacted?

Explanation / Answer

The reactions of alum are given below,

2 Al + 2 KOH + 6 H2O ----> 2 K[Al(OH)4] + 3 H2

K[Al(OH)4] + 2 H2SO4 -----> KAl(SO4)2 + 4 H2O

KAl(SO4)2 (aq) cooled ------> KAl(SO4)2.12 H2O(s)

2 moles of Al produces 2 moles of K[Al(OH)4]

1 mole of Al produces 1 mole of K[Al(OH)4]

and 1 mole of K[Al(OH)4] produces 1 mole of KAl(SO4)2.12H2O solid.

hence,

1 mole of Al produces 1 mole of KAl(SO4)2.12H2O solid.

27g of Al produces 474.46 g of KAl(SO4)2.12H2O

1.2 g of Al produces 474.46/27 * 1.2 g of KAl(SO4)2.12H2O

mass of KAl(SO4)2.12H2O solid peoduced = 21.087 g
