Question

+ ?1 points GVSUChem 115v2 8.c.P005 My NotesAsk Your Teacher Bulb A Bulb B Bulb C Gas Mixing Manifold In this problem we will be mixing three gases using the drawing above for reference. Bulb A has a volume of 1.0 L and contains 628.8 torr of Nitrogen. Bulb B has a volume of 1.0 L and contains 264.7 torr of Neon. Bulb C has a volume of 0.5 L and contains 417.4 torr of Oxygen. Assume that at the start the mixing manifold contains no gas (under vacuum) and has a volume of 0.10 L. When all three valves are opened, the gases mix freely driven by entropy. What is the final pressure inside the whole system at a temperature of 20°C? atm

Explanation / Answer

Using,

final pressure of a gas = initial pressure x initial volume/final total volume

Final pressure of N2 = 628.8 torr x 1.0 L/2.6 L = 241.8 torr

Final pressure of Neon = 264.7 torr x 1.0 L/2.6 L = 102.0 torr

Final pressure of Oxygen = 417.4 torr x 0.5 L/2.6 L = 80.3 torr

Total pressure after mixing = (241.8 + 102 + 80.3)/760

                                            = 0.56 atm
