Question

14. One way to follow the progress of a ration and detec its cquivalence point is by monitoring the conduciviy of the tiration reaction mixure. For example, consider the way the conduniviy ofa sample of sulfuric acid changes as it is titrated with a sandard solution of barium hydroxsde before and then afier the equivalence point Titration a. Write the total ionk equation for the titration reaction b. Which of the four graphs in igure P8.9 comes closeu to represemiing the changes in oonducaiviny during the tisrmion (he zero poins on the y-axis of these graphs represents the conducivity of pure waier the break poines on the r axis represen the equivalence poine in the iaration) 0 Volume of tierant 0 Ob) Volume of titrant 0 Volume of siarant Volume of tirant FIGURE PB

Explanation / Answer

a) Balanced equation for titration: H2SO4(aq) + Ba(OH)2 (aq) ----->BaSO4(s) +H2O(l)

total ionic eq: 2H+(aq) +SO42-(aq) +Ba2+(aq) +2OH- (aq) --->BaSO4(s) +H2O(l)

b) option b represents the conductometric titration of H2SO4(aq) with Ba(OH)2 (aq)

As the products of the rxn are H2O(l)(pure water) so at y=0 only H2O(l) is present.Also the volume of base at zero point represents the equivalence point volume .Thereafter a steep rise in the curve is due to conductivity of excess OH- due to dissociation of excess Ba(OH)2 added after equivalence point.

Ba(OH)2(aq)--->Ba2+(aq) +2OH- (aq)
