SAMPLE XAMINATION 2 267 o-c Question4 Gaseous Element X is heated nozzle. ia a rigid cylinder in a mass spectrometer and released through a narrow Magnet Negative Plate Beam (A) Photographic Film Beam (B)--? 12 3 45 6 1 2 3 45 6 When gas X is released from a mass spectrometer, two different ions are formed (+1 and +2) and pass through a magnetic field. Three isotopes are detected,X, X and"X.When the photographic film is displayed, the resulis for the beams (1-6) are displayed in the rectangalar box. (a) Which beam of ions (A or B) represents the X2 ion? Explain (b) Which beams (1-6) represent the X-32 isotope? Explain.

(a) Beam B represents X+2 ion. Since there are three isotopes X-30, X-31, and X-32. Donot confuse between X+2 and X+2 ions. First one is due to loss of two electrons whereas latter one is due to isotope mass effect ion, like M+, M+1, and M+2 ions.

(b) Beam-6 represents X-32 isotope. Isotope peaks always appear at higher m/z values compare to normal element ion. This means isotopes peaks appear at right-hand side of the normal M+ peak. Since there are three isotopes, implies X-30 is beam 4, X-31 is beam 5 and X-32 is beam 6.
