Explanation / Answer
moles of NO taken = 56 g / ( 30 g/mol) = 1.8667 mol
moles of H2O taken = 36 g/ (18 g/mol) = 2 mol
consider the given reaction
4 NO + O2 + 2 H2O ---> 4 HNO2
moles of NO required = 2 mol H2O x ( 4 mol NO / 2 mol H2O) = 4 mol NO
but only 1.8667 mol NO are present
so
NO is the limiting reagent and H2O is in excess
so while calculating the amount of HNO2 , NO should be considered
now
moles of HNO2 produced = 1.8667 mol NO x ( 4 mol HNO2 / 4 mol NO)
moles of HNO2 produced = 1.8667 mol HNO2
mass of HNO2 produced = 1.8667 mol x 47 g/mol
mass of HNO2 produced = 87.733 g
so
the answer is b) 87.7 g HNO2
