Explanation / Answer

First Picture

Peaks with interpretation :

Diagnostic region is 1500 cm-1 to 4000 cm-1

1. Broad peaks with sharp lines at 3400 cm-1 and 3700 cm-1 = Presence of -OH group where peak at 3400 cm-1 represents Hydrogen bonded -OH and peak at 3700 cm-1 represents free -OH group.

2. Peak at 2900 cm-1 is the characteristic peak of sp3 -C-H streching. No doublet is observed due to presence of only one H atom.

3. Peak at 3054 cm-1 is the characteristic peak of sp2 =C-H streching.

4. Peak at 1676 cm-1 represents carbonyl (C=O) streching. This lower frequency corresponds to conjugated C=O group.

Fingerprint region is 400 cm-1 to 1500 cm-1

5. Multiple bands near 1550 cm-1 represents aromatic C=C streching.

6. Multiple bands near 1400 cm-1 represents sp3 C-H Bending.

Second Picture

Peaks with interpretation :

Diagnostic region is 1500 cm-1 to 4000 cm-1

1. Broad peaks from 3300 cm-1 to 3600 cm-1 represents the O-H groups. The moderately sharp peak near 3350 cm-1 represents hydrogen bonded -OH group.

2. Peak at 2849 cm-1 and 2812 cm-1 is the characteristic peak of sp3 -C-H streching. Doublet is observed due to presence of symmetric and antisymmetric streching.

3. Peak at 3133 cm-1 is the characteristic peak of sp2 =C-H streching.

4. Peak at 1673 cm-1 represents carbonyl (C=O) streching. This lower frequency corresponds to conjugated C=O group.

Fingerprint region is 400 cm-1 to 1500 cm-1

5. Multiple bands in the range 1400 cm-1 to 1600 cm-1 represents aromatic C=C streching.

6. Multiple bands near 1350 cm-1 represents sp3 C-H Bending.

Conclusion : If the first compound be recrystalline Furoin, then the presence of broad -OH peak and sp3 C-H doublet streching may correspond to some solvent impurity. Free -OH groups can make H-bond with solvent and the sp3 C-H doublet streching may come from the same solvent.
