Question
How to determine percentage of isomers given IR of product obtained
my lab requires i find the percentage of ortho, para or meta toluene based on the c-h out of plane present in my IR spectrum. i have no idea how to figure this out.
the integration value for the p-bromotoluene is 722.87
the integration value for the o-bromotoluene is 435.76
there is no meta
it appears theres toluene around 729 and that integration value is 277.32
how do i figure out how much of each is present? the theoretical yield was 1.37g and i had .71 g (51.82% yield)
Explanation / Answer
The molar mass of ortho/para-bromotoluene = 171 g/mol
The no. of moles of the product = 0.71 g/171 g mol-1 = 0.004152 mol = 4.152 mmol
The overall integration = 722.87 + 435.76 = 1158.63
The no. of mmol of o-bromotoluene = (435.76/1158.63 )*4.152 = 1.56 mmol
The no. of mmol of p-bromotoluene = (722.87/1158.63)*4.152 = 2.59 mmol
Now, the percentage of o-bromotoluene = (1.56/4.15)*100 = 37.6%
Therefore, the percentage of p-bromotoluene = 100-37.6 = 62.4%
