Question

J. (10 pts) A study of the reaction was measured for several initial concentrations of A, B, and C. The data is ted below in various forms. Use the relevant graph(s) to write the rate law for this reaction. inetic study was carried out on the reaction A + 2B +C 2P. In the study the initial ra plot Clearly explain how you arrived at your answer. 600 500 o 400 300 200 100 8 -11-5.7 y 2x 0.6223 11.2 y -2E+07x+ 617.82 0.000005 0.00001 0.000015 0.00002 Initial Rate In [A]? 140 120 100 80 60 5,2 4.7 -4.2 y1x-7.1045 4 y -8E+06x+173.61 20 0.000005 000001 0.000015 -12 In [Blo Initial Rate 10 2.1 1.6 14 12 O 10 2.6 -10.5 y 2E+06x y-3E-14x-11527 0.000005 0.00001 0.000015 0.00002 Initial Rate -12 In [C]o

Explanation / Answer

Starting from the simplest one

In plot of ln initial rate vs ln[C]o the rate is not changing with concentration of C. This means the rate of reaction doesn't depends on C that is the reaction is independent of concentration of C.

So,

* Reaction is zero order with respect to C

Now, for A and B the plot of 1/ concentration vs initial rate is similar. This means the reaction will have similar order with respect to A and B

From plot of 1/[A]o vs initial rate it is clear that the rate of reaction is increasing with decrease of 1/[A]o. Now, decrease of 1/[A]o means [A]o is increased. So, ultimately the rate of reaction is increasing with increase in concentration of [A].

So, the reaction is first order with respect to A and B

** If there were [A]^2 instead of A then the reaction would be second order.

Now ,

Rate law expression can be written as:

Rate = k [A]^1 [B]^2 [C]^0 = k[A] [B]
